WKCE scores steady in Monroe

MONROE - The number of students who have scored proficient or advanced in reading and math tests on the Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examination in the Monroe School District has been steady for the past five years, but this year there was a slight decline.

The district received the results of the WKCE Tuesday that students in third through eighth grade and high school sophomores took in the fall. Results showed 32.4 percent of students in Monroe were proficient in reading and 40.8 percent were proficient in math. The state average for students being proficient in reading is 30.4 and the state average for students proficient in math is 37.4. Six percent of students in the district were advanced in reading and 14.8 percent were advanced in math. Overall, 36.6 percent of students scored proficient or advanced in reading on the WKCE, and 48.6 percent of students scored proficient or advanced in math.

In the past five years, the students who have scored proficient or advanced in reading on the WKCE in the district has ranged from a high of 41.2 percent in 2011-12 to a low of 38.4 percent this year. The percent of students who have scored proficient or advanced in math on the WKCE in the past five years has ranged from a high of 58.1 percent in 2009-10 to a low of 55.6 percent this year.

Attempts to reach the district's Director of Curriculum and Instruction Dan Keyser for comment were unsuccessful.
