MONROE - Democrats Ernie Wittwer and Pat Bomhack were separated by just two votes in the Wisconsin Senate District 17 Democratic primary as of 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. With all precincts reporting, Wittwer had 3,828 votes to Bomhack's 3,826 votes.
Wittwer of Hillpoint was the obvious favorite among Green County Democrat primary voters, pulling off a 20-point defeat of Bomhack of Spring Green for about 60 percent of the 1,146 votes cast Tuesday. Wittwer took 687 votes compared to Bomhack's 458 votes.
In Lafayette County, Bomhack came back with 312, or 52.8 percent, of the 590 votes cast in the race. Wittwer caught 276 or 46.7 percent.
As winner, Wittwer will face Howard Marklein, the only Republican candidate, in the November election.
Sen. Dale Schultz, who currently holds the seat, is not seeking re-election.
