MONROE - Ernie Wittwer declared victory over Pat Bomhack Tuesday in the 17th Senate District Democratic Primary, but a recount could still be coming, according to published news reports.

Wittwer saw his lead grow to seven Tuesday after the candidates were separated by just two votes on election night Aug. 12.

Counties were certifying election results through canvass Tuesday, with eight of nine releasing their final numbers. Juneau County had yet to finish its canvass but doesn't expect any changes. The county expects to finish its count Wednesday, at which point Bomhack will decide if he wants to ask for a recount. Bomhack said Tuesday he hasn't made up his mind on the possibility, according to reports.

Should Wittwer hold on to his lead, he will face Rep. Howard Marklein, R-Spring Green, in the November election.

The Senate seat has been held by Republican Dale Schultz since 1991.
