MONTICELLO - The libraries of Green County recently worked with the Green County Historical Society to offer a Green County Barn Photo Contest in conjunction with the ongoing Green County Historical Society Barn Inventory project.
The idea for a photo contest came from the Monticello Public Library staff, which allowed other Green County libraries to join in. Monticello, Monroe, Belleville and Albany libraries participated. Photos were entered and patrons chose a winner at each library. Dennis Dalton, a professional photographer from Monroe, chose a county winner in two classes: Under 18 years of age and adult.
The photos were varied and the GCHS's Barn Inventory Project will be using the photos in future displays and on its website.
The county winner in the adult group was Lisa Beach, who submitted her photo to the Monroe Public Library. The under-18 category county winner was Cameron Lewis, who submitted his photo at the Belleville Public Library.
Other participants who won at each library in the adult category were Marion Viney for the Belleville Public Library, Carol Bump for the Albertson Memorial Library in Albany and Erin Goins for the Monticello Public Library.
In the under 18 category, the other winners were Matthew McCullogh for the Monroe Public Library and Hailey Seavert for the Albertson Memorial Library in Albany.
In an update on the barn inventory project, three barn inventory crews have completed individual township barn inventories. The inventory project will pick up again in fall, after the leaves have fallen, which enables the barn inventory crews better visibility for photographs of the barns being inventoried.
Upcoming events include the showing of Wisconsin Public Television's Reel-to-Real, program, "Wisconsin Barns Stories in Wood and Stone." This documentary celebrates the rich history of barn architecture in Wisconsin, the stories about life on the farm in the state's early years and looks at what people today are doing to preserve and restore valuable rural treasures.
The program will begin at 7 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Belleville Public Library. After the presentation, a discussion session will be lead by a member of the Green County Historical Society Barn Inventory project. For more information on this program, call the Belleville Public Library at 608-424-1812.
