MONROE - The Monroe Art Center began its 35th Anniversary Season with two gallery openings on Sept. 3. Frehner Gallery hosted Michigan professional photographer Gary Cialdella. Ciadella also served as the judge for MAC'a 21st Annual Photography Contest and Exhibit.
He said he enjoyed the opportunity to judge such a high quality show. "It is important to see a large variety of work together in one space for photographers of all levels, in order for them to study and learn from each other. There seems to be an abundance of interest in photography in this community and I am pleased to have been able to participant," he said. Cialdella's work, which is an outgrowth of his recently published book titled "The Calumet Region: An American Place/Photographs," published by Brauer Museum of Art, Valparaiso University, and University of Illinois Press, as well as the entries in the Photography Contest, may be viewed at Frehner Gallery and Wesley Hall through Sept. 24.
Fifty-two photographers entered a total of 102 photographs in the Monroe Art Center's 21st Annual Photography Contest and Exhibit. Two age classifications, Junior (under the age of 18) and adult, competed in three separate categories: Portrait, Landscape, and Unclassified. Listed by category, the winners in the Junior Classification were: Portrait - first place, Arly Rupnow; second place, Chandler Tarala; and third place, Judson Rikkers. Landscape - first place, Judson Rikkers; second place, Kevin Schmidt; and third place, Chandler Tarala. Unclassified - first place, Maddisyn Bauman; second place, Jacob Lutz; and third place, Kevin Schmidt. Cash awards: Junior Best of Show, Maddisyn Bauman; first runner-up, Kevin Schmidt; and second runner-up, Arly Rupnow.
Winners in the Adult Classification were: Portrait - first place, Jennifer Rikkers; second place, Marshall Venden; and third place, James Meldrum. Landscape- first place, Nancy Schmidt; second place, Ann Pedder Reilly; and third place, Bobbie Bernet. Unclassified- first place, James Meldrum; second place, Roger Dorneden; and third place, Joan Betz.
