MONROE - Monroe's west side encountered soggy conditions Wednesday afternoon, even though the forecast for sunny, warm conditions held true. Several water mains broke, which closed city streets.
West 10 1/2th Street, between 6th Avenue West and 4th Avenue West will be closed indefinitely, because of pavement damage from broken water mains.
"There are three breaks, that we know of," said Mike Kennison, Water Department Utility Supervisor. "They're big mains, with lots of pressure behind them."
Kennison said water department crews will be working into the night on repairs.
According to Kennison, crews were flushing hydrants in the area at about 2 p.m., when a hydrant unscrewed.
"That slammed a value shut and blew holes in the mains," he said.
Kennison said the mains are not very old.
One break is located near Ganshert Dental Clinic, West 6th Street, and two are on West 10 1/2th Street.
At least large area of street pavement, behind the old Walmart building, is heaved and split open, and water has washed out sand fill.
Kennison had no estimate of the cost of the damage.
