MONROE - The unofficial start to summer begins this weekend as Green County residents look forward to a number of activities.
There are parades to honor veterans, community activities to help people celebrate the three-day weekend, graduations and, of course, a breakfast to remind everyone of the county's farming heritage.
The weekend kicks off Friday with the Yesteryear Days Festival in Albany.
The three-day annual event features live music, a carnival, food, a kids pedal pull, duck races at the dam and two parades, 1 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m. Monday.
For people who love to run, there will be a 5-mile run and a 1-mile walk Saturday.
New Glarus hosts Music Fest in the village park.
Games, food, face painting, inflatable rides and a silent auction to raise money for the Special Olympics and the high school arts program will take place during the weekend.
Activities include a co-ed volleyball tournament and kickball tournament Saturday, a petting zoo Sunday, and music Saturday and Sunday. Local talent, including the high school jazz band, the high school choir, Kinderchor and the Madison College Jazz Band will perform Monday.
Throughout the weekend in New Glarus, there will be music at the New Glarus Hotel, and a glassblowing demonstration at Toffler's Pub and Grill.
Green County Breakfast on the Farm will be held this year from 6 to 10 a.m. Saturday, at the Alan and Yvonne DeVoe farm, N266 Twin Grove Road, Monroe.
Thousands of people come every year to eat a hearty breakfast of eggs, sausage, coffee cake and sundaes. They stick around to tour the farm, take part in hay wagon rides, see the arts and crafts and listen to music.
The first dairy breakfast was held at the Juda church in 1961. In 1979, the Green County Ag Chest decided to move the breakfasts away from schools and churches and hold the event on a farm. The breakfasts allow people to get a first-hand look at a local dairy farm.
For people who want to see a parade, communities will have their Memorial Day parades Monday.
On Sunday, several area schools, including Monroe, will hold their graduations.
