Walking with a purpose

MONROE - There are 25 teams expected to take part in the Green County Alzheimer's and Dementia Alliance Walk at the Behring Senior Center, 1113 10th St., Saturday.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and the opening program begins at 8:30 a.m.

The walk helps raise money to provide services for people who suffer from the disease as well as caregivers who take care of them, said walk chairman Shelly Muranyi.

Muranyi is familiar with the disease. She helped take care of her mother, Mildred Kubly, who had the disease. Mildred died March 30.

"I was a caregiver before we got professional help to take care of her," Muranyi said.

As the disease progressed, it became more and more difficult to take care of her mother, she said.

"I was fortunate in that I could afford to get someone to help," she said. "There are families that can't afford to hire someone."

The walk also provides people with the chance to talk to other families and caregivers who are going through the same situation.

"You can meet people who are working for the same thing," Muranyi said.

According to the Alzheimer's Association website, www.alz.org, Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, which causes problems with memory, thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, life-long hobbies or social interaction. Eventually, the disease worsens and can be fatal.

In 2009, the Green County Memory Walk raised about $38,000.

People can still register to walk or donate money to the Green County Alzheimer's Association.

Anyone interested in walking may come to the senior center Saturday morning. Participants can purchase a T-shirt for $50 or can take part in the walk for free.

Teams and individuals can also pre-register at the senior center between 2 and 5:30 p.m. Friday.
