Walking with a purpose

MONROE - Will Buchanan and his wife, Brooke, have spent the past six months on the road - literally.

Buchanan has always been interested in freedom, for himself and for others. He discovered that he wasn't alone in his concept that government has grown too big and has become too intrusive.

Six months ago he and Brooke sold their home and decided to move to New Hampshire. According to Buchanan's Web site, walkforliberty.com, New Hampshire has no general income tax, no sales tax, no capital gains tax, the least restrictive gun laws in the nation and the lowest crime rate in the nation.

In effect, it has what the Buchanans want: Freedom.

They support the Free State Project, an effort to bring people who support less government to one state, specifically the state of New Hampshire. According to Buchanan's Web site, being in the same state will allow like-minded people to concentrate their efforts.

"It also creates a supportive atmosphere in which they're inspired to work for liberty," their Web site states. "Many individuals and families have been so inspired by the prospect of achieving liberty now that they've already moved to New Hampshire as part of the Free State Project."

Because so many people have already moved to New Hampshire it has "the best ongoing chance of becoming even more free since there are hundreds of activists who plan to move there in the near future," the Web site said.

The Buchanans walked over 2,000 miles since April and have about 1,000 more to go before they reach New Hampshire. Will's brother, John, and his wife, Yuka, went along for most of the trip but recently returned to Indiana. Now, Will walks and Brooke drives the RV. Their dog, Jake, rides in the RV with Brooke.

"He tries to chase trucks," Will laughed as Jake looked up at him.

Their trip has taken them through large cities and small towns. They don't stay in one place very long, Will said his goal is to make at least 10 miles a day. Sometimes they make more than 10 miles but some days they make less.

They were in Argyle Monday and spent Monday night in Monroe. Both communities were friendly, they said.

They were also impressed by the scenery.

"I'm surprised by the hills around here," Will said.

"It's like driving on a roller coaster," Brooke said. "But we really like it here."

But the trip is more than just about walking and enjoying the scenery. Along the way, they talk to people about why they decided to move to New Hampshire and they explain their interest in smaller government.

"People have been pretty positive," Will said. They've talked to normal people and they've also talked to reporters in small towns, he added.

"We didn't know what it would be like," Brooke said about the cross-country tip. "We've met a lot of great people. It's been a great experience."

They planned to stay in Brodhead Tuesday night before starting for Beloit Wednesday. They except to be in New Hampshire by the end of November.
