MONROE - The Green County Sheriff's Department budget for 2012 will be about $5.6 million, an increase of about $125,00 compared to the 2011 spending plan.

The sheriff's department is projecting that its final 2011 expenses will come to almost $5.5 million, an increase of about $39,000 more than what was budgeted for 2011.

The reason for the increase is unbudgeted wages and fringes, Green County Sheriff Jeff Skatrud said. When the contract with the deputies concluded last December, the county budget was already finished, he said.

"Utility and fuel costs increased," he said. "To offset that, we cut a seasonal maintenance position and requested over $42,000 less in capital expenditures than last year."

To help save some money in 2011, Skatrud said, the department started the electronic monitoring program in June. The bracelets, he said, saved the department approximately $5,000 already, and an almost $2,000 in revenue gained from rental fee for the equipment.

The budget was passed by the Green County Finance and Accounting Committee Sept. 22. The budget will be complied with the other departments and given to the Green County Board of Supervisors at its meeting tonight, Oct. 18. The board will vote on the budget in November.
