Volunteer drivers needed for area senior citizens

MONROE - The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Green County is looking for volunteer drivers for area seniors.

Many seniors no longer drive, so need help accessing services and medical care, or they want or need socialization. In rural Green County, seniors who do not drive may find themselves isolated and disconnected from the communities where they have lived and worked for many years.

Volunteer driver programs, like the ADRC's Driver Escort program, reduce those limitations by making transportation available to locations in town and in other cities, counties and even states. In 2015, volunteer drivers in Green County worked 1,073 hours and drove 23,092 miles. Eighty percent of the trips were medical related, to assure that seniors who do not drive got to doctor appointments. The other 20 percent were for shopping or socialization.

Volunteer drivers have flexible schedules. There is no set time or day a volunteer will be asked to drive; requests for drivers are based on need from the community. Drivers also are reimbursed for each mile they drive.
