MONROE - Many people took advantage of the great weather Thursday to check out Monroe's new Walgreens store on Eighth Avenue.

Walgreens opened for its first day of business at 8 a.m.

"it's been very busy," store manager Michael Stade said. He said his morning had been filled with people asking for the location of products.

Don Schoville and his fiancee Sandi Stratton, both from Monroe, admitted they came to the grand opening to check out the bargains and for a candy run.

Schoville said he used to be a sales representative, and Walgreens stores always were one of his favorite stops.

"I always liked Walgreens," he said. "The store is well layed out, and products always on the shelves; the checkout people are well-trained and nice. The sections were always up-to-date and everything buttoned down."

Schoville said a person can always get a good price on certain things at Walgreens, "but you gotta catch 'em."

One good price offer they are going to look over is the Walgreens Prescription Savings Club. Neither has a prescription drug plan.

Walgreens offers more than 400 generic medications for less than $1 a week on a 90-day supply.

The prescription savings plan will not work in conjunction with federally-funded Medicare plans. But Walgreens pharmacist Kirby Holland, Belleville, can help seniors choose the best Medicare Part D plan for them, based on the medications they need to take.

The savings plan is more than just for prescriptions, though. The Walgreens $20 membership ($35 for a family) gives the cardholder a 10 percent rebate on any Walgreen product.

Dorothy Hanson and Eileen Zurfluh, Albany, were both a little embarrassed to be caught at the grand opening.

"Now it won't be any secret from our kids that we were in Monroe," Hanson laughed. "I called her up and said, do you want to do something crazy?"

The women said they were just curious about the store and were on a scouting trip.

Hanson said. "We wanted to see if they had the products we normally get."

Jennifer Martinez, 25, Monroe had her 3-year-old son and 18-month-old daughter in a shopping cart.

"We're just checking out the store. I really like it. So far the people are friendly and it's well-organized," she said.

Martinez said she will most likely buy "kids' stuff and diapers."
