Vandalism frustrates officials, worries residents

MONROE - Amanda Albaugh, Monroe, was upset Saturday when she went outside and discovered three tires on her car were slashed.

"We moved here about a year ago and the people who owned the house before us told us they never even locked their doors," Albaugh said. "Now, I'm not feeling very safe."

Albaugh, who lives in the 1400 block of 14th Avenue, wasn't the only person who had a vehicle vandalized late Friday or early Saturday.

Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said tires on 20 vehicles were slashed between 10:30 p.m. Friday and 4 a.m. Saturday. Some people had two tires slashed and some had four.

Knowing she wasn't the only victim doesn't make it any easier for Albaugh.

"We live in a good neighborhood and all of our neighbors are really nice. We didn't think something like this would happen," she said.

The police department is looking for clues or for someone to come forward with a tip about who might be responsible.

"It's very frustrating," Kelley said. "We'd love to have some information."

It's hard for the department to solve crimes such as this, Kelley said, because it only takes someone a few seconds to slash a tire and move on.

The vandalism occurred mainly on the south side of Monroe, Kelley said, but there were incidents in other areas of town.

Albaugh ended up spending $200 to get her tires replaced. The total cost of the tires was $300 but she had a $200 deductible.

"I just got laid off and don't have extra money to pay for something like this," she said.

She's also worried it might happen again.

"We have a one-car garage and we have to park our car on the road," she said.

These vandalism incidents weren't the first in Monroe this year.

According to the Monroe Police Department, there have been more than 125 incidents of vandalism since May that are being investigated. Many incidents involved lawn ornaments and gazing balls that were stolen, then smashed against cars and buildings.

There also is no way to know the age of the vandals, Kelley said.
