UW crop specialists to speak at ag meeting

BELMONT - University of Wisconsin-Extension crop specialists will be speaking at the 2013 Southwest Wisconsin agronomy update meeting on Thursday, Jan. 10 at the Baymont Inn and Convention Center, 103 West Mound View Ave. in Belmont.

Joe Lauer, UW-Extension corn specialist; Dan Undersander, forage specialist; and Shawn Conley, small grains specialist, will present research and drought management information for the 2013 production year. Ted Bay will present a summary of a fall/spring sulfur application demonstration.

Corn topics will cover transgenic technologies performance in Wisconsin; predicting next year's corn hybrid performance; and the stability of corn management recommendations in drought years. Small grains topics will start with a review of soybean and small grain performance in 2012 and then address SCN and other plant parasitic nematode populations with a summary of 2012 soil sample test results, and conclude with a discussion of the first-year results on prescription soybean seeding rates. Forage topics will include alfalfa/grass growth in drought, alfalfa variety trial performance in drought and predicting yield in future years, and management of drought-stressed pastures and hay fields this spring.

The meeting will start with registration at 11:30 a.m., followed with lunch at noon and the meeting beginning at 1 p.m.

The registration fee is $35 per person which includes lunch and an information packet. Participants can pre-register in person at the Grant or Lafayette County Extension Offices or by sending the registration by Jan. 3 with fees payable to Ted Bay at the Grant County Extension Office, 916 East Elm St., Lancaster, WI 53813.
