DARLINGTON — An underage driver and his underage passenger were arrested for alcohol offenses and on other charges after getting stuck in a ditch and running from police at about 2:30 a.m. Feb. 2, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.

Cory H. Swenson, 19, Blanchardville, was jailed on charges of reckless driving, knowingly fleeing an officer and obstruction. He was also cited for operating while intoxicated and failure to stop at a stop sign.

Swenson’s passenger, Jacob R. Ruf, 20, Darlington, was jailed on charges of obstruction and knowingly fleeing an officer. He was also cited for underage drinking and having a fake ID.

A deputy had another vehicle stopped on Wis. 78 near Argyle when Swenson came up from behind, abruptly swerved around the stopped vehicle, went down into the ditch and then drove back onto the road and continued driving, according to Sheriff Reg Gill.

The deputy left the traffic stop and began pursuing Swenson, but instead of stopping, Swenson reportedly continued northeast into Green County, eventually getting stuck in a ditch off Gould Hill Road.

Swenson and Ruf got out of the vehicle and fled on foot but were located a short distance away, Gill said. Green County deputies assisted in arresting the pair.
