Two UTV drivers arrested for OWI causing injury
accident

DARLINGTON — Two Darlington men were arrested on drunken driving charges in unrelated utility terrain vehicle crashes that caused injuries Sunday evening just north of the city, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.

The first accident happened at about 6:45 p.m. on County F near the intersection with Furnace Hill Road, Town of Willow Springs.

It is a legal UTV route, Chief Deputy Troy Loeffelholz said.

Michael P. Mathys, 50, rear-ended a horse-drawn buggy, Loeffelholz said.

The horse and the man driving the buggy were uninjured, but the man’s wife and their two children riding in the buggy sustained minor injuries. They were transported by Green County EMS of Darlington for treatment. The Darlington Fire Department assisted on scene.

Mathys was arrested on a charge of operating a UTV while intoxicated, causing injury to a minor. He was also cited for operating a UTV without a valid registration, having open intoxicants in the vehicle, refusing to provide a required sample for chemical tests and operating a UTV in a careless manner. He was booked at the Lafayette County Jail, then released to a responsible party.

Another UTV driver from Darlington crashed in the same area less than two hours later, with EMS and the Darlington Fire Department again responding with deputies to the scene.

Brian E. Lancaster, 45, hit a deer with his UTV at about 8 p.m. on Furnace Hill Road, Town of Willow Springs. His passenger, his wife, sustained minor injuries in the accident but was not transported by EMS, Loeffelholz said.

Lancaster was arrested on a charge of operating a UTV while intoxicated, causing injury, and was booked at the jail before being released to a responsible party.
