MONROE - Two Monroe High School students reportedly died as a result of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash Friday afternoon in the town of Clarno.

One died at the site of the accident, and the other died at UW Hospital in Madison.

Earlier Friday night, MHS principal Chris Medenwaldt said there was an accident involving three Monroe High School students in an email sent to students' parents. At that time, he said there "was one fatality and two students are in critical condition."

He also said the district will have staff available to support students at 9 a.m. today at the high school.

All performances of the musical "Willy Wonka" that were scheduled for this weekend have been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.

MHS Activities Director Jeff Newcomer said Friday's girls and boys basketball games and today's boys hockey game were canceled.

According to a Green County Sheriff's Department news release, the two-vehicle accident happened at 2:20 p.m. Friday at the corner of Melvin and Clarno roads in Clarno township south of Monroe.

The release said there were multiple injuries and a fire had to be extinguished on one of the vehicles. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, and three people were airlifted to UW Hospital in Madison.

Initial reports indicate that a sedan was traveling west on Melvin Road when it failed to stop at an intersection and collided with a northbound truck.

The condition of all of the injured was last reported as critical, and all identities are being withheld pending notification of next of kin, according to the release.

The roads were closed for about six hours to permit an investigation by sheriff's deputies and the Wisconsin State Patrol Traffic Accident Reconstruction Unit.
