MONROE - The conditions of a Monroe woman and the passenger in her vehicle, a South Wayne woman, were not immediately known following a one-vehicle crash south of the city Thursday afternoon, according to a Green County Sheriff's Department lieutenant.

Two Med-Flight helicopters transported Emily M. Rush, 26, Monroe, and her passenger, Carrie J. Smith, 27, South Wayne, to a hospital following a crash at about 7:22 p.m., northwest of the intersection of Bethel and Franklin roads, Green County Sheriff's Lt. Rodney Hicks said late Thursday.

The 2007 Chevrolet Aveo was traveling south on Bethel Road when the car left the road and rolled before coming to rest on its wheels in a field facing north, he said.

Emergency response personnel extricated Rush and Smith as the Med-Flight helicopters were called to the scene.

Smith and Rush were both wearing seatbelts and the airbags in the car deployed, Hicks said.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, he said.

Bethel Road was closed to traffic at Patterson Road for a few hours following the crash.

Monroe Fire Department, EMS and the Green County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene.
