DARLINGTON - Two carnival workers were injured on the Darlington Festival Grounds when the ride they were setting up collapsed on them midday Thursday, June 6.

Frederick Cross, 47, of Michigan, and Ryan Kumbier, 21, Fond du Lac, sustained non-life threatening injuries when part of the ride collapsed and struck them, according to Darlington Police Chief Jason King. The men were not trapped underneath the collapsed portions.

Cross and Kumbier are employees with Spectrum Carnivals and were setting up for the Darlington Canoe Festival, which starts Friday. King said Thursday he did not know the name of the ride involved.

Staff from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected in Darlington Friday morning to investigate the incident. Police have halted further setup of the ride and fenced it off until OSHA staff have finished their inspection.

Police "requested the incident be investigated by staff from OSHA with expertise in these matters in order to ensure the safety of festival-goers this weekend," King said.

"This particular carnival company has provided rides at the Darlington Canoe Festival for many years without incident," he added.

The call for help for Cross and Kumbier came at 1:13 p.m. Thursday. Police and two units from Rural Medical Ambulance Service responded.

Both men were taken to Memorial Hospital of Lafayette County.

"The owner of the carnival has updated us and informed us Cross is being transported to a Madison hospital for surgery to repair a fractured leg," King said.

Kumbier was treated for minor injuries, the carnival owner told King.
