DECATUR TOWNSHIP - Two Brodhead people were hospitalized Sunday morning, Sept. 9 after their horse-drawn buggy was struck by a car driven by a man with a revoked driver's license. Three children in the buggy received minor injuries but refused medical treatment at the scene, according to the Green County Sheriff's Department.

The accident occurred at 8:12 a.m. when a horse-drawn buggy operated by Lester E. Schmucker, 43, of Brodhead was traveling north on County E, north of Borchardt Road in Decatur Township. The buggy was rear-ended by a north-bound car, driven by Nicholas J. Roth, 32, of Albany, officials said.

The crash caused the buggy to overturn in the roadway. Lester Schmucker and his wife, Katie M. Schmucker, 42, also of Brodhead, both sustained injuries and were transported to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison by Brodhead EMS and Albany EMS. A condition report on the two was not available Monday morning.

The three children in the buggy were Wanda Jean Schmucker, 14; Brenda Rose Schmucker, 11; and Minerva Irene Schmucker, 9.

The horse pulling the buggy sustained serious injuries and had to be euthanized at the scene, officials said. The buggy had extensive damage and was removed from the scene.

Roth was not injured. Roth was arrested at the scene on a warrant for failure to pay a fine for a third offense of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was also cited for operating a motor vehicle while his license was revoked, related to the OWI charge, and for inattentive driving. Roth was jailed in Green County.

His vehicle had severe damage and was towed from the scene.

The Brodhead EMS, Albany EMS, Brodhead Fire Department, and Brodhead Police Department were also dispatched to the scene. Mary Jane Grenzow 9/10/12
