NEW GLARUS - A New Glarus man was arrested Monday after a high-speed chase that began in Dane County and ended in the village.

Ralph F. Stammen, 54, was arrested for fifth-offense drunken driving and fleeing an officer. Other charges are pending. He was jailed in Dane County.

New Glarus Police Chief Steve Allbaugh said his department received a report from Green County Sheriff's Department deputies that they were in pursuit of a vehicle around 7 p.m. Monday on Wisconsin 69. Allbaugh was told a 2000 Oldsmobile minivan turned onto 14th Avenue from Wis. 69. New Glarus officers were dispatched to assist the deputies from Green and Dane counties.

Stammen stopped at his residence on 12th Avenue and locked himself inside his home. He locked his wife, Becky, outside. After Stammen refused to allow police to enter his residence, his wife gave officers permission to enter the home.

Officers initially were unable to find Stammen when they entered the residence, but later found him locked in a room in the basement. He eventually surrendered to Dane County deputies.

Officers found narcotics, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and other illegal items in the basement room. Allbaugh said his department contacted the State Line Area Narcotics Team to process the scene.

Drug charges against Stammen are pending.

No court date has been set for Stammen in Dane County.
