buggy crash
Debris from a horse-drawn buggy was left scattered across Wis. 81 in Lafayette County near Elk Grove as a result of an afternoon car vs. buggy crash May 9, 2021. Two of the three buggy occupants were airlifted to UW Hospital in Madison due to injuries sustained in the accident. The horse survived. The crash remains under investigation.

ELK GROVE — Three people were injured when an Amish buggy was hit by a van on Wisconsin 81 Sunday afternoon.

The crash occurred in the 24000 block of 81 around 4:25 p.m. when the open single-horse buggy was rear-ended by the van, driven by Matthew J. Westemeier, 39, Platteville.

According to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office, the impact of the crash pushed the horse and buggy into the north-side ditch, with all three occupants thrown out of the buggy.

One man in the buggy was taken by Southwest Health EMS to Southwest Health, then airlifted to UW Hospital in Madison. A second man was airlifted from the scene by Med Flight helicopter to UW Hospital. The third occupant was treated at the scene.

The horse survived the crash, the Sheriff’s Office said. The buggy was severely damaged and was towed from the scene, as was the van, which had moderate damage.

Belmont fire and EMS, Darlington police and the Lafayette County Highway Department assisted at the scene, as did “numerous motorists who stopped and rendered aid,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash remains under investigation.
