Town's Wilhelm Tell Festival set to kick off September 2

NEW GLARUS - The 74th Wilhelm Tell Festival will be held Sept. 2 to 4 in New Glarus.

On Friday, Sept. 2, the Kinderchor's Laternenzug (Lantern Parade) will begin at the Village Parking lot on Railroad Street, next to Brenda's Blumenladen. All children are invited to participate, walking through the downtown area and ending in the Fest Tent, which will be located on First Street in front of The Bank of New Glarus. The Kinderchor will perform a short concert as the "Opening Ceremony" for the festival weekend.

The English performance of Schiller's Wilhelm Tell will be performed at The Tell Grounds on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 3 and 4. The grounds open at noon. The Lunch Stand, located at the grounds, will offer bratwurst, hot dogs, and Swiss Cheese on Rye. New Glarus Beer, soda and water will also be available along with the popular Landjaeger.Entertainment will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the Bell Ringers and Swiss Miss Dancers. The pageant begins at 1:30 p.m., with the Usherettes performing three folk dances at intermission.

Immediately following the play on Saturday, people are welcome to set up their tents for the Swiss Camping. Swiss camping allows folks to camp at the Tell Grounds enjoying a campfire with S'mores (made with Swiss Chocolate) as well as Cervalat, a Swiss wurst (sausage). A typical Swiss continental breakfast of hard rolls, cheeses, jam and fruit will also offered. Wake up to the sounds of Switzerland.

A yodel concert will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Fest Tent.

A yodel showcase of talent will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, in the Fest Tent. Anyone wishing to participate can contact petra@wilhelmtell.org or the New Glarus Chamber. Sunday will begin with the Friends of the New Glarus Library book sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Village Hal, with proceeds going toward the building fund. The annual Art in the Park will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Village Park.
