TOWN OF NEW GLARUS - Residents of the Town of New Glarus can weigh in on the type of trash and recycling bins and the collection process they would like to use at the next town board meeting 6:30 p.m. July 22 at New Glarus Town Hall in the Swiss Miss Center, 1101 Wis. 69, New Glarus.
The board is in the process of negotiating a new waste and recycling contract. The current contract with Waste Management expires on December 31.
Keith Seward, town chairman, and Pattie Salter, clerk-treasurer, have been researching the town's options by meeting with representatives of three waste haulers, reviewing quotes and service options, and considering the cost differences in the type of collection (manual versus automated) and the frequency of bulky waste pickup days.
Their research into other communities indicates that automated collection is becoming the industry standard, and they found the communities that use the process have also seen an increase in recycling.
Town residents currently use their own receptacles and pay for weekly, manual pickup of trash; bi-weekly collection of recycling; and two, bulky waste days - one in the spring and one in the fall.
If residents elect to use automated collection, each residence would receive a 95-gallon trash bin and a 95-gallon recycling bin.
The larger containers hold more trash and improve collection efficiency, according to Salter. They are made of durable materials and have sturdy wheels that should make them easier to roll down to the road on garbage day, she added. However, they are bulky and will take some time getting used to. Also, only garbage put in the bins will be picked up.
By going with automated collection process, each resident may save at least 45 cents per month on average over the five-year contract period, Salter said.
Town board members would like to hear from residents on the services they prefer. For more information, contact Pattie Salter, clerk-treasurer, at 608-527-2390, or townofnewglarus@tds.net.
