MONROE - Farm tours at six small family Green County farms that are led by women will be offered Sunday, Sept. 8 as part of the Soil Sisters event.
"According to the last U.S. Census of Agriculture, women-owned farms increased 30 percent, making women farmers one of the fastest growing groups of new growers," said Lisa Kivirist, director of the Rural Women's Project, a venture of the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service supporting women farmers, and owner of Inn Serendipity in Browntown. "Soil Sisters highlights a cross-section of inspiring women farmers in south central Wisconsin prioritizing small-scale, diversified, community-focused agriculture."
The farms will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and will be leading tours throughout the day. The free event is open to the public and will take place rain or shine. Farms will have various homegrown items for sale. No pre-registration is needed.
The participating women farmers include:
Jamie Baker of Primrose Valley Farm, Belleville.
Kriss Marion of Circle M Farm, Blanchardville.
Lori Stern and LeAnne Powers of Lucky Dog Farmstay, New Glarus.
Lindsey Morris Carpenter and Gail Carpenter of Grassroots Farm, Monroe.
Lisa Kivirist of Inn Serendipity, Browntown.
Joylene Reavis of Sugar Maple Emu Farm, Brodhead.
Dela Ends of Scotch Hill Farm, Brodhead.
Three farms will be hosting on-farm workshops on Saturday, Sept. 7. Sugar Maple Emu Farm will host the "Raising Emus Seminar;" Primrose Valley Farm will host the "Herbs and Edible Flowers" seminar; Inn Serendipity Farm and Bed and Breakfast will host the "How to Start a Bed and Breakfast: Living the Farm Hospitality Dream" seminar and the "Sustainable Living in the 21st Century" seminar.
