MONROE - The Monroe Times claimed several statewide awards at the annual Wisconsin Newspaper Association Foundation banquet Friday in Middleton.
The Times received three first-place awards to go along with three second-place and two third-place honors.
"The recognition the foundation showed the Times demonstrates what can be achieved in the newspaper industry despite the economic downturn and reduced editorial and advertising staff sizes, which are plaguing newsrooms across the state," said Carl Hearing, Times publisher.
The Monroe newspaper was given a first-place award for an editorial titled, "Mayor's recommendations go too far", written by Jeff Rogers, the Times former editor. The other first-place awards went to the paper for its 2008 Cheese Days preview section, and for sports page design by Adam Krebs, Times sports editor.
The Times received second-place honors for newspaper photography and best special section categories, as well as sports news story, which was written by Krebs and sports reporter Mark Nesbitt. The third-place awards were for sports pages and a sports photograph by Brenda Steurer, Times photographer.
The Post-Crescent of Appleton took daily newspaper of the year honors.
The Sauk Prairie Eagle of Sauk City was the weekly newspaper of the year.
The newspapers scored the most total points in the daily and weekly divisions of the WNA contest. Points were awarded based on the number of first-, second- and third-place finishes in each of the contest categories.
The WNA is comprised of the state's daily, weekly and college newspapers.
The publisher of the Dodge County Pionier was elected president Friday of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association during the group's 156th annual convention.
