Phil and Renee Porterfield hold hands as they pray, following their morning Bible reading before their work on the farm begins Sept. 25. The couple celebrated 50 years of marriage this summer. They've known each other since they were young children, still recalling the first time they met at a vacation Bible school in Albany at age 5. (Times photo: Anthony Wahl)
MONROE - Monroe Times photographer Anthony Wahl received recognition from the National Press Photographer's Association for his photo essay, "Farming, Faith and Perseverance," which was published in October in the Times.

Wahl earned second place in the Best Published Picture Story (Smaller Markets) category for his photos of farmers Phil and Renee Porterfield. "Farming, Faith and Perseverance" highlights the rich farming history of the Porterfields. Phil is the fifth generation of his family to farm on the Porterfield's 216-acre property between Brodhead and Albany.

The photos detail the daily struggles of the couple. Phil lost a leg in a farming accident nearly 20 years ago, and Renee is in the early stages of Parkinson's disease.
