MONROE - Can cheese crush cranberries?
That's the question Green County residents might help answer if they vote for Cheese Days as the "Best Festival Weekend" in the 2008 Wisconsin Wonders' "Best of Towns" competition.
The final day to vote is April 24.
Monroe's Cheese Days weekend festival faces some pretty tough competition, Green County Tourism Director Noreen Rueckert said.
Warrens Cranberry Fest is a popular tourist destination, she said. Also included in the list is the Old Car Show in Iola, Port Washington's World's largest Fish Fry and Stoughton's Syttende Mai.
Monroe's Cheese Days has been a popular festival since 1914.
Monroe isn't the only place vying for the "best town" distinction.
Brodhead also is a finalist for "Best Biking Getaway" and New Glarus is a finalist in the "Most Exciting Architecture," "Best Dining" and "Best Ethnic Getaway." Brodhead is known for its proximity to the Sugar River Bike Trail and overnight stays at the Earth Ride Cycling Boutique and Hotel. New Glarus is well-known for its Swiss culture and food. It's known as "America's Little Switzerland."
Rueckert said the honor of winning will bring publicity from around the state to some of Green County's most beautiful spots. It also could mean an influx of tourists and tourism dollars to the county.
"It speaks well for the county and the great things we have going on," she said of the honor of being a finalist.
Wonders of Wisconsin focuses on what makes the state and Wisconsin towns special.
