DARLINGTON - Three Illinois residents have been named as suspects in the case of a burglary at a Darlington business in September.

Warrants for the arrests of Vanity L. Garcia, 25; Robby Patton, 27; and Melvin Whetstone, 31, all of Aurora, Illinois, were issued Wednesday on charges of burglary, theft and criminal damage to property.

The three are believed to have been involved in the theft of nearly $30,000 worth of merchandise from U.S. Cellular in Darlington on Sept. 17. Two men, believed now to be Patton and Whetstone, were recorded by security cameras breaking through the glass door of U.S. Cellular and moving throughout the store.

According to a police report, minutes before the burglary, Darlington police received a 911 call reporting a violent sexual assault in a Darlington cemetery. Police could locate no sign of an assault and now believe the trio of burglars placed the call to buy time to commit the burglary without police interference.

The three now each face a maximum possible prison sentence of 12.5 years.
