Three firefighters, one civilian injured in Monroe basement fire

MONROE - Three firefighters and one civilian were injured Thursday evening after a house fire was reported in Monroe.

Monroe Fire Chief Dan Smits said a fire was reported at 8:17 p.m. at 1011 24th St. The Monroe and New Glarus fire departments responded to the scene, where a fire in the residence's basement had caused a minor injury to a resident.

Smits said responders were able to contain the fire to the basement and had the blaze under control within 30 minutes. Three responders sustained minor injuries; two were treated at the scene, while the third was transported to Monroe Clinic and was released shortly thereafter.

The civilian was also treated and released at Monroe Clinic.

Smits said the cause of the fire is yet unknown, although it caused approximately $75,000 of damage to the residence.
