SOUTH WAYNE - The job of postmaster includes more than sorting the mail and accepting packages from customers.

It includes dealing with customers on a one-on-one basis.

Barbra Studer became South Wayne's postmaster Feb. 2; she is excited to be back in town.

Studer was the temporary postmaster in 2005 and recently worked in the Albany post office.

Coming back to South Wayne allowed her to reconnect with many of the people she had gotten to know a couple of years ago, as well as to make new friends.

"I'm thrilled to be back," she said. "I know so many of the people. It's nice to see them again."

After 10 years with the United States Postal Service at a dozen different post offices, she's glad to be in South Wayne.

The village post office is more than just a place to conduct business.

"This is a family community," she said.

Some customers stop in every day to pick up their mail and they spend a few minutes talking to Studer. They talk about their families, their health, the weather - just about anything that comes to mind.

"I find out about their lives," Studer said.

Stueder's outgoing personality and genuine respect for the people who visit the post office make it easy for them to talk to her.

Regardless of how busy Studer is - she is the only person who sorts the mail every day - she always has a minute or two to chat with someone who stops by.

It's that special touch that makes her job worthwhile.
