MONROE - Main Street Monroe welcomes The Jimmys for the first Concert on the Square this summer.
Underwritten by Colony Brands, the series of six will be kicked off by homegrown talent Jimmy Voegeli and his band of bluesmen at 6:30 p.m. June 9. According to the news release, there will be a red-hot horn section and Voegeli on the keys at a show that will be funky and rambunctious from the first notes of the first song until the closing bars of "Ophelia," the band's customary closing tune.
In keeping with the theme of local flavors, the Green County Dairy Queens, sponsored by the Green County Ag Chest, will introduce themselves at intermission and followup with cheese samples to the audience.
The June 9 concert also will focus on local clubs, groups and vendors with booth spaces on the inner ring of the south side of the downtown square. Spaces are open to service clubs, community organizations, youth groups, nonprofits, artisans, crafters, re-sellers, farmers market and other vendors. Groups are invited to use booth space to promote their mission, raise funds, or recruit members and volunteers. Artisans and crafters may sell their wares and are encouraged to do demonstrations. Everyone is encouraged to offer games, make-and-take crafts for kids, prize drawings or activities to attract concert-goers to visit the booths. To reserve a booth, send a $25 check to Main Street Monroe, PO Box 544, Monroe, Wisconsin 53566. Include your name (and/or group name), contact number, email address and a brief description of what will be in the booth. Reservations also may be dropped off at the Main Street office on the second level of Wisconsin Bank and Trust. Booth reservations are due by June 7.
Main Street Monroe's featured nonprofit for the night is Family Promise of Green County, a volunteer and community-based organization that helps homeless and low-income families achieve lasting independence. Other groups to be featured this season include Shakespeare on the Edge, Care Net Pregnancy Center, Literacy Council, Faith Addiction Awareness and Monroe Volunteer Firefighters Association.
Concert-goers again will have a chance to win the "Best Seat in the House" contest with premium seating on custom Adirondack chairs from Wooden Trooper, plus refreshments and swag. Sign up all summer at Heartland Graphics; winners will be drawn before each show.
Other concert dates are June 23 (Copper Box), July 7 (Something to Do Band), July 27 (Back Country Roads), August 11 (Cookie and the Real Deal) and August 24 (Corey Cox). For the latest updates, follow "Downtown Monroe Events and News" on Facebook or visit the web site mainstreetmonroe.org.
A significant portion of the Main Street budget is derived from sponsors. Donations to Main Street Monroe are tax deductible. Volunteers also are needed. Contact Main Street Monroe director Jordan Nordby at 608-328-4023 or monroemainstreet@tds.net.
