Recently, 37 Cub Scouts and leaders from Troops 101, 115 and 180 in Monroe volunteered 148 hours of community service to clean up 5.2 miles of Honey Creek.
The troops have done the clean-up for 12 years. This year, the scouts gathered 80 bags of trash. Among the more interesting items found were two units of piping supports, a doll and two 4-foot by 8-foot cheese signs.
Art Whipple has helped with every Honey Creek clean-up. The 76-year-old started in scouting when he was 9. He's been involved in some way for 67 years.
"We didn't pick up as much trash this year, which is a good sign," Whipple said.
The first year of the clean-up, scouts picked up three dump truck loads of trash. This year, they had one truck load.
There's the usual littered culprits. The majority of the trash is shopping bags, construction plastic and beverage containers. The containers alone filled four bags.
Whipple said the scouts really get into the clean-up.
"They get right down into the creek bed and pick stuff up," Whipple said. "They do an excellent job."
Whipple said the clean-up takes three to four hours. The first few clean-ups involved a larger area, and took much longer. Scouts used to pick up trash on a 15-mile stretch of Honey Creek.
Not only do the scouts satisfy a community service project requirement with the clean-up, they become more environmentally conscious.
"There's the satisfaction of getting things cleaned up," Whipple said. "It makes the community look better, and the kids get to see how much trash there is around.
"It makes them think twice before throwing trash everywhere."
Minhas Craft Brewery is hosting a party to celebrate the release of its new line of flavored malt beverages, called Corsairs.
The party will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 29, at the brewery. Corsairs varieties are Mojito, Orange Squeeze and Velvet Ice. The brewery is offering two free drinks for those 21 and over. Bring your ID. There also will be giveaways every 30 minutes.
