The Beat: County board meetings, coins and a local garden park

MONROE - The Green County Board of Supervisors didn't expect to meet Tuesday.

There wasn't going to be enough business to require a June meeting and board chairman Art Carter doesn't like to schedule meetings for only one or two things, if they can wait until the following month.

But the board had to meet to discuss a resolution that allows Green County to join seven other counties in forming a health care program for seniors and the disabled. The resolution had to be passed by July 1.

Green County Human Services Director Greg Holcomb knew he was the main reason for the meeting.

"I asked Mike (Doyle, Green County Clerk) how long I should talk tonight," he jokingly told the board. "He told me it was going to be a nice night and I should keep it short because none of you want to be here."

Holcomb kept his comments short, answered a few questions and wrapped up his presentation in about 20 minutes.

The board approved the resolution 27-0.

Green County Emergency Management project director Tanna McKeon was surprised June 18 when she received recognition from the Wisconsin National Guard.

Gen. Don Dunbar visited the county to talk to local officials about flood damage and what the National Guard could do to help local communities.

Before he left he presented McKeon with a coin to show the state's appreciation for her hard work during the recent storms and flooding.

On one side of the coin is a flag with two stars and an inscription that reads, "Presented by the Adjutant General of Wisconsin for Excellence."

On the reverse side is the seal of the state.

McKeon was "completely shocked" to receive the coin, she said.

"It was nothing I expected," she said.

It was quite an honor, she added.

Jean Winkler has spent several months creating a park for the village of Browntown. Last fall and again this spring she planted flowers and gathered items to put in the Browntown Garden Park.

The park is at the corner of Wisconsin 11 and County M.

It includes more than 40 perennials, herbs, strawberries, rhubarb and cactuses. There are also picnic tables, benches, birdhouses and a swing set.

An open house for the park is planned for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 13.
