MONROE - Monroe school district Director of Curriculum and high school Co-Principal Jennifer Thayer plans to resign from her duties Monday to take a job with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).

She starts her duties with DPI July 6.

Incoming Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers appointed Thayer to be assistant state superintendent in the division of reading and student achievement.

Thayer said she was shocked to learn of the appointment about a week ago. She and Evers served on several committees in the past, and he was familiar with the Monroe school district. Thayer worked for DPI for three years before she came to Monroe in 2001. She became co-principal at the high school in May.

Her job at the DPI will be to oversee Wisconsin Knowledge Concepts Examination testing, the Title 1 programs and school and district improvements under the No Child Left Behind law. She also will be working with a program to help urban students.

Thayer said she will miss the Monroe school district.

"I really appreciate the school district and I've enjoyed working here," she said.

Thayer said she will announce her resignation at Monday's school board meeting.

Monroe Superintendent Larry Brown couldn't be reached for comment Friday.
