MONROE - A Monroe teenager was charged Wednesday with child abuse and criminal damage to property after assaulting an Albany girl near Clarno last weekend.

Matthew Siegel, 18, faces a Class H felony charge of child abuse, as well as misdemeanor charges of criminal damage to property, disorderly conduct and bail jumping.

According to a police report, Siegel became angry at the 17-year-old victim after encountering her in Monroe. Later, Siegel followed the victim to a residence in Clarno, where he became belligerent.

The victim said Siegel seized her by the head and slammed her head into a garage door. The assault caused a laceration on the victim's ear.

Siegel fled the scene, but later became involved in another altercation with several Monroe residents in the 2300 block of 17th Avenue in Monroe. Siegel again became belligerent, but left the scene after a verbal altercation.

A short time later, Siegel returned wearing a ski mask and used a metal hammer to smash the taillights of one of the residents' vehicles. Siegel fled the scene again, but his vehicle was identified.

Siegel's actions violated his probation from a 2015 Lafayette County charge of obstructing an officer, as well as his probation from another bail jumping charge in May of this year.

If found guilty of the child abuse charge, Siegel faces a maximum possible sentence of three years in prison.
