SOUTH WAYNE - A Black Hawk High School industrial arts teacher received a little more than a surprise apple on his desk when arrived for work Wednesday.

Steven Craven, an insurance agent from Horace Mann, presented Ervin Ziegler, a Monroe resident, with a $250 prize, plus a $250 donation to the Black Hawk High School. The money was collected through the Educators Run Away with 65K sweepstakes, put on by Horace Mann.

Horace Mann is a national insurance company based in Springfield, Ill., which focuses on educators' financial needs.

Ziegler received his award in the school's cafeteria.

The sweepstakes started Jan. 6 and concluded Monday. The contest was open to educators and other school employees across most of the United States. The contest will award a total of $65,000 in prizes and donations, which will range from a grand prize and donation of $20,000, a first place prize and donation totaling $9,000, and numerous $1,000 and $500 awards. Half of the total award amount will be given to the prizewinner, with the other half donated in the winner's name to one or more not-for-profit, education-related organizations.
