MONROE - A good growing season has prompted a Monroe resident to show off some tall corn stalks and invite others to provide proof of even taller crops in a friendly competition.

Al Schumacher of Monroe rents farmland to the Kent brothers in Winslow. He found out a positive crop season has resulted in three stalks from 10 to 12 feet tall. The stalks were brought up to his home along 9th Street on Wednesday evening and placed beside the Wisconsin Community Bank parking lot to showcase their height for anyone to see.

Green County Cheese Days provided an opportunity to show off local crops to out-of-town relatives visiting for the festival. Schumacher said he would allow anyone who is interested to take photos over the weekend.

"I thought it'd be a quick way to show them the type of growing season we've had," Schumacher said. "We're going to welcome anyone."

He added that he had contacted Green County Agriculture Agent Mark Mayer about his idea to invite local growers to provide their own samples of the growing season and to call out anyone who thinks they can beat the 12-foot stalks of corn. Schumacher said his idea was met with interest and decided on the friendly competition.
