MONROE - A theft in broad daylight Tuesday at an auto repair shop south of Monroe was intercepted and the suspects arrested, according to the Green County Sheriff's Office.

Tyler J. Corning, 18, Argyle, was arrested on a charge of theft, and Donald T.D. Pitman, 19, Winslow, was arrested on a charge of theft as a party to a crime. They were released pending court.

The incident happened at about 3 p.m. at Green County Repair, W5428 Melvin Road, Town of Clarno.

Corning and Pitman "were in the process of loading tire rims into their truck when another vehicle pulled up," according to Sheriff Mark Rohloff.

The driver, Pitman, fled, leaving Corning behind.

Corning fled on foot and was subsequently apprehended a distance away from the scene by a sheriff's office detective. Pitman was then also arrested, and the vehicle impounded.

"The two are opportunists, and when they drove by and observed auto parts (and) scrap outside, they stopped to take them," Rohloff wrote in an email to the Times.

State court records show no criminal history for Corning or Pitman. Earlier this month, Pitman successfully fulfilled a deferred prosecution agreement on a charge of credit card fraud in Green County Circuit Court.
