MONROE - A 12-year-old boy whose parents died in a head-on collision that killed three people in Jefferson Township remains hospitalized in Madison in serious condition.

"He's in intensive care but we're optimistic at this point," said Kaitlin Spooner, 20, sister of the victim, Clay Spooner.

Their parents, Douglas H. and Cynthia L. Spooner, both 40 and from Brodhead, died in the crash, along with the driver of the other vehicle, 41-year-old Penny L. Sprague, also of Brodhead.

A news release Sunday initially listed Sprague as living in Juda.

Meanwhile, police Monday released no new information on the investigation into the cause of the two-vehicle crash, which occurred about 6:30 p.m. Saturday on Highway 11/81 - just west of County OK and about five miles southwest of Brodhead, according to the Green County Sheriff's Office.

Sprague and Cynthia Spooner died at the scene. Douglas Spooner and his son, Clay, were flown to University Hospital, where Douglas Spooner later died. Clay had "very serious injuries," authorities said, and a Facebook page for the family's Spooner Cattle business stated Clay suffered "many facial fractures, a broken femur and a broken wrist."

Kaitlin Spooner Monday said her parents and brother were headed to Monroe at the time of the crash. The Spooners have another son, Cody, 18.

The Wisconsin State Patrol reported Monday afternoon that an accident reconstruction still was pending, and it remained unclear what may have contributed to the crash.

Preliminary investigations, authorities said, show a vehicle driven by Sprague crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a vehicle driven by Cynthia Spooner.

Cynthia Spooner was wearing a seatbelt, and it was not clear whether the man or the boy were wearing seatbelts. Officials believe Sprague was not wearing a seatbelt.

There also is a Facebook page, "Spooner Children" where many condolences and offers of assistance have been left for the family.

Death notices for Douglas and Cynthia Spooner and Penny L. Sprague, appear on Page A2 of today's edition.
