BLANCHARDVILLE - Wanted: One school administrator for small district. Must be honest and straightforward; technology-minded; respectful of all people; and possess a strong work ethic and high degree of integrity and trustworthiness. Should also be an innovative thinker who sets high expectations.

That description could be used for the ideal candidate for the next superintendent of Pecatonica schools, based on the results of an online survey the district conducted in December. The attributes listed are those

that were ranked as important or very important by 95 percent or more of those responding to the survey.

The district is looking for a permanent replacement for interim Superintendent David Westhoff, who took a one-year position as interim superintendent for the school district last summer. His contract expires June 30.

Other attributes ranked as very important or important by at least 90 percent of respondents were: futuristic; ability to multi-task; visionary; and views small schools as a strong point.

To get an overview of residents' feelings about the position, the district posted an online survey through Dec. 28. There were 70 responses:

Survey respondents were overwhelmingly female, accounting for 73 percent.

Sixty-two percent were between the ages of 41 and 64, while 26 percent were 20 to 40 years old and 10 percent were under 20.

Those living in a village made up 37 percent of respondents. Twenty-four

percent lived in a township, non-farm, while 18 percent lived on a farm.

Fifty-seven percent had the Blanchardville Zip code of 53516, while 31

percent had Hollandale¹s 53544 Zip code.

The board aims to be able to post the superintendent position by mid-February.

Westhoff said it is realistic to shoot for having a superintendent on board by summer; the school board will consider a timeline for the search at its meeting Monday.

What the board still needs to determine is whether the position will be full or part time. The district, which has 434 students enrolled, has a full-time superintendent, a full-time principal at the middle and high school in Blanchardville and a full-time principal at the elementary school in Hollandale who also serves as the director of K-12 special education.

An initial third option to share a superintendent with the Argyle school district is no longer being considered. The Argyle district told Pecatonica in November it was not interested in sharing a superintendent at this time, Westhoff said.

The Pecatonica School Board will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Pecatonica High School library. Also on the agenda is action on the proposed recurring referendum that would add $175,000 to the tax levy each year for the next two years; and an update on the 4-year-old kindergarten program.
