MONROE - The Monroe school board won't spend $7,000 to $12,000 for a consulting firm to aid in the search for a new superintendent. Instead, Ron Olson, district business manager, and Joe Monroe, director of pupil services, are leading the search.
Monroe updated the board on the superintendent search and the timeline at a board meeting Monday. He said there are 12 candidates who have applied for the superintendent position including candidates from Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota and Massachusetts. Monroe said there could be up to 15 applicants by Friday's application deadline.
"We have people with experience and people without," Monroe said. "It's quite a range in terms of backgrounds."
Superintendent Larry Brown resigned in March to take the superintendent position in the Rice Lake Area School District. Brown, who served as superintendent in Monroe for five years, will continue in that role until his resignation is effective June 30.
The board will review the applications April 16 to 20 and then host interviews with candidates April 30. Interviews with finalists are set for May 7.
School board members are expected to give feedback on the candidates before interviews are set up.
"The next step at the next meeting is to see who the board wants in for interviews," Monroe said.
In other action, the board:
n Approved 2012-13 lunch prices. Lunch prices are increasing 10 cents next year. The lunch prices for kindergarten through fifth grade next year will be $1.95 and sixth to eighth grade lunches will be $2.20. High school lunches will be $2.45. Adult lunch prices are going up 25 cents to $3.25. According to the Healthy-Free Kids Act, districts with school lunch prices less than $2.46 on average are required to increase their lunch prices by at least 10 cents until it meets the federal requirement for free and reduced lunches.
n Approved a $10,000 revocable living trust grant from Marian Burkhardt to the district for the Monroe Public Library.
