Super 8 in Monroe plans additions

MONROE - Super 8 Motel in Monroe is planning some super amenities for their guests.

A 9,750-square-foot west addition is being planned to house a 17-foot by 36-foot swimming pool, a whirlpool, fitness center, business center, a 1,000-square-foot conference room and 11 new guest rooms. The addition will be connected to the main hotel by a hallway.

Two of the rooms will be 450-square-foot long-stay rooms with a kitchenette, living room area and king-size bed. One guest room will be handicapped accessible with a roll-in shower. Six other rooms will have large showers, rather than bathtubs.

All the unique room features were motivated by customer feedback said Art Bartsch, co-owner with Barbara Bartsch and Richard and Jane Thoman.

"Over the years, we've had guests who have asked us for some more amenities," Bartsch said. "We think these will be a good addition to Monroe."

The first floor of the addition will be built into the side of a small hill, with a second story, almost 4,000 square feet, built on top. The addition will be open to, and facing, Sixth Street.

Bartsch said the addition is being built with 2x6s and the ceilings, floors and walls will have extra insulation. The walls between the rooms will be 8 inches thick, with resilient sound-stripping, to make them as quiet as possible.

Building will start "as soon as the snow stops, and we can start moving ground" Bartsch said.

Richard Thoman and Bartsch are serving as general contractors. Bartsch said they have hired local contractors wherever possible, starting with architect Dave Haroldson, Rock Solid Construction for excavating and foundation, Stuckey Construction, Erickson Plumbing and Heating, A-1 Electric, Monroe Heating and Sheet Metal. For the pool construction, sprinkler system and solar energy, Wisconsin contractors from Beaver Dam, Madison and Sun Prairie were hired.

Thoman and Bartsch are planning some unique energy-saving systems for the new wing. The pool and hot water in the new rooms will be solar-heated. Heat recovered from the dehumidifier will be used to help heat the pool as well.

Air-exchange ventilators will use the warmth from exhausted air to pre-warm incoming air. And energy efficient boilers will be installed.
