MONROE - High School students have practiced for two months to perform the musical "Bye Bye Birdie" next weekend.

The play, set in the 1950s, was first performed on Broadway in 1960. In 1963 it was made into a film. It was performed on Broadway again in 2009.

High School teacher Jennifer Moehn, who directs the play, said it was one of her favorites and she looked forward to bringing it to the Performing Arts Center.

There are 32 high school students taking part in the play. Teacher Dan Henkle directs the 21 students performing the music.

"I think it's going to a be fun show," Moehn said.

There are some veteran student-actors in the play, such as Tyler Moser, Abby Kennison and Blake Antos, Moehn said. There are also some first-timers who wanted to be in a high school play before they graduate.

"We have a nice mixture of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors," she said.

Kennison said it's exciting to be in the musical, and she thinks people will enjoy the show.

"The music is catchy and upbeat," she said. "It keeps you on your toes."

The music helped draw Moser and Antos to the play, they said.

"I like the oldies music," Antos said. "I'm singing the songs at home."

The play is about a music sensation who is drafted into the United States Army. It was inspired by Elvis Presley's induction into the Army.

Conrad Birdie, the singing superstar character, plans to record one last song before he enters the Army.

The play follows the comic adventures as he prepares to sing his song on "The Ed Sullivan Show" before he leaves.

Along the way are several songs that have become popular over the years, such as "Kids" and "Put on a Happy Face."

There will be two performances in the Performing Arts Center at Monroe High School. The first is at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 26, and the second is at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 27.

Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for students and children.

Tickets are available from 7:45 to 8:05 a.m., and from 3:30 to 4 p.m. at the Monroe High School office.
