MONROE - Monroe Middle School students got to spend a little time Thursday at the Green County Humane Society.

The students took part in the "Project World" program that encourages volunteerism, teacher Deb Freitag said.

"It's a way to make kids aware of the needs in our community and a way to teach them about volunteering," she said.

The students did a little of everything Thursday to help out at the shelter.

Some of the students folded laundry, some watered the animals, some cleaned the yard and outside kennels and some did office work.

But all 21 students pitched in to help.

"They're a big help," shelter manager Tonya Kelly said.

The students couldn't wait to get started. Some of them have volunteered at the shelter in the past.

Alexa Dash helps out at the humane society a few times every month. She said she was excited when Freitag told her the students would help out at the shelter.

"I wanted to come down and help," she smiled.

She and Rustin Alton spent time folding laundry for the animal cages.

Connor Wahl and Ben Prophett had fun watering the dogs and cats.

"Look at him," Prophett said excitedly, as he pointed to a small dog in a cage.

"Look at this one," Wahl replied, as he pointed to another dog.

Judging from the way the dogs wagged their tails and the cats rubbed against their crates, it appeared the animals enjoyed the students' visit, as well.
