Students evacuate after kitchen mishap

MONROE - A kitchen mishap during the lunch period briefly caused the evacuation of Abraham Lincoln Elementary School Wednesday.

Director of Pupil Services Joe Monroe said it was unclear what exactly happened, but there was enough smoke that Principal Sara Latimer made the decision to evacuate the school and call the fire department at approximately 11 a.m.

"Our staff did a great job following procedures and getting the kids out and to the high school," Monroe said. "The district has done a lot of work to make sure we have evacuation plans in place at each of our schools."

Students were only out of the building for approximately 25-30 minutes, Monroe said. The children were taken across the street to Monroe High School and began watching a movie in the performing arts center. All children were accounted for.

"It was a minor disruption of the school day," Monroe said. "The kids were able to eat their lunch and return to class. There was no significant damage to the kitchen, it just had to be aired out."

In a Facebook post that was posted at about 1 p.m., the school district informed its followers of the incident and that all children were accounted for and safe and that any danger had cleared.

Monroe has taken over the role of acting district administrator for the week while administrator Rick Waski is in Milwaukee for an annual week-long conference for school administration officials.
