MONROE - The United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has started to disburse emergency aid checks for student veterans who applied for educational benefits under the Post 9-11 GI Bill for tuition, housing and textbook payments.

A press release from the Green County Veterans Office, said the VA began distributing the emergency aid checks Friday.

There are about 25,000 pending claims for educational assistance.

Students can go to a VA regional benefit office with a photo identification and a course scheduled to request advance payment of the education benefits.

Students can also apply for benefits online at www.va.gov. The online application will guide veterans through the process to supply needed information. Veterans who apply online will receive their emergency payments in the mail.

Student veterans can also request courtesy transportation to VA regional benefits offices. To request transportation, veterans must call their nearest veterans medical center and ask for the "volunteer transportation coordinator." Transportation will be on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Veterans officials recommend people check their mailboxes or bank accounts before leaving home because some veterans will find their checks have already been sent.

The emergency checks have a maximum payment of $3,000. Most veterans will receive smaller payments.
