Storms cause damage in Green County

MONROE - Severe thunderstorms packing high winds and heavy rain caused damage across Green County on Monday.

Area firefighters were called to numerous locations late Monday afternoon for downed trees, downed power lines and fires, mostly along a line from Browntown to Belleville.

Reports from citizens started coming into Green County dispatchers at about 5 p.m. Firefighters soon followed with their own reports of downed trees blocking roads and power lines lying under trees and across cars as they approached reported locations.

Monroe Fire Department was dispatched at about 5:15 p.m. to the 1400 block of 15th Avenue for a report of a lightning strike and a power pole on fire. The department later responded to a collapsed barn and damaged silo at Allison Road and Wisconsin 69 in Washington Township, which was reported at about 6:55 p.m. Reports indicated that the top of the silo had been completely ripped off in the storm.

Browntown Fire Department was called out at about 5 p.m. to Ullom Road near Smoke Valley Road before receiving another call to South Klondike Road. After a third call in Browntown's district, Argyle Fire Department was called to assist at South Klondike Road and Skinner Hollow Road.

Albany Fire Department was called out to a transformer fire in the 200 block of West Main Street at about 5:15 p.m. A short time later it was dispatched to the 500 block of Mineral Street.

A call on Dutch Hollow Road and Witt Road dispatched Monticello Fire Department at about 6 p.m. for a split tree and power lines down across a car and a house, with a male inside.

Blanchardville Fire Department responded at about 9:40 p.m. to a lightning strike at a residence on Sawmill Road.

Other locations where fire crews were dispatched included County X and Nye Road, County E near Albany, and Condon Road, south of Albany.

An outage summary from Alliant Energy showed 1,739 customers in Green County and 372 customers in Lafayette County were without power at 8:30 p.m. Monday. By 10 p.m., 706 customers in Green County were without power, while one customer in Lafayette County was still without power.

One inch of rainfall was measured at The Monroe Times' office from 4:45 to 7:15 p.m. in the initial downpour. Another three-quarters of an inch of rain was measured from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in a second rainfall.

According to Weather Central, 6.4 inches of rain was recorded in Monroe in the month of June through June 29. The normal precipitation for Monroe in the same time period is 5.36 inches.
