MONROE - The arrival of what could be the first wicked winter storm of the season is just a few hours away.

A major winter storm is expected to hammer the area this evening through early Friday afternoon. Green and Lafayette counties - and all of southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois - are under a winter storm warning until noon Friday.

In what the National Weather Service calls "a classic track for heavy snow," the approaching weather system is expected to drop 7 to 11 inches of snow across the region, with locally higher amounts possible.

South of the state line, freezing rain is forecast in advance of snow.

And if all that weren't enough, gusty winds are expected to be blowing the substantial amounts of white stuff all over the place.

Widespread snow will become heavy tonight and into Friday morning. Snowfall rates at times could exceed more than 2 inches an hour.

Winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 30 mph, will produce blowing and drifting snow in open areas through Friday morning. The storm will cause "major impacts to commerce and society," according to the NWS advisory. "Travel will become dangerous Thursday night ... and will be strongly discouraged."
