State to pay for security

MONROE - The City of Monroe Police Department is being reimbursed for the officers it sent last week to Madison to help police there manage protesters in and around the state Capitol.

Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley informed the city's Public Safety Committee Monday that the police department will be paid $7,320 for regular- and over-time costs associated with the effort.

Kelley said four officers were sent on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, "and then off and on everyday but Thursday."

No additional police officers have been sent to Madison since Friday, and Kelley doesn't plan to send anymore.

Capitol Police sent out a request a week ago last Friday asking for mutual aid from area police departments, said Kelley.

At the time of the initial request, Capitol police said no reimbursements were available, Kelley added, but are now paying reimbursements.

Sending officers was a sacrifice to the city, but didn't impact police protection in Monroe, he said.

"This was not (for) helping Governor Walker or the 14 Democrat Senators," Kelley said. "It's helping the Capitol Police."

Kelley said his department initially sacrificed one officer from the shift, and then was sending officers on their days off.

The officers from Monroe car-pooled, using one department vehicle, parked at a staging area outside the Capitol area and were bussed to the site.

"This was police chiefs and sheriffs helping police chiefs and sheriffs," Kelley said.
